Attorney General Todd Rokita has renewed his focus on combating robocalls and protecting consumers as National Consumer Protection Week begins. The week, which runs from March 2 to March 8, highlights the importance of consumer rights and awareness.

“Quite often, these robocalls are part of criminal schemes aimed at stealing Hoosiers’ identity and taking your hard-earned money,” Attorney General Rokita said. “These annoying and illegal calls are the work of professional scammers looking to prey on unsuspecting victims. Make sure to take steps to protect yourself when robocallers try to disturb your peace.”

Rokita’s office encourages residents to use available tools and resources to block unwanted calls. He has joined other attorneys general in urging telephone companies to expand call-blocking services for consumers. Various options are available for both landline and mobile phones. Consumers can learn more about blocking unwanted calls through information provided by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) at https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/stop-unwanted-calls-and-texts.

For landline users, some service providers allow limited blocking of numbers or anonymous callers, with fees varying by plan. Call-blocking devices are also available online, but buyers should review sellers’ reputations and return policies before purchasing.

Smartphone users can access a list of call-blocking apps compiled by CTIA-The Wireless Association at https://www.ctia.org/consumer-resources/how-to-stop-robocalls. Checking device manuals for built-in features is also recommended.

Most telephone providers offer some form of call-blocking service; customers should contact their provider or visit its website for more details.

If consumers encounter scams or fraudulent calls, they are encouraged to file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) through ftc.gov or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP. The FTC collects these complaints in its Consumer Sentinel Network database, which supports investigations by law enforcement agencies domestically and internationally.

Hoosiers whose numbers are registered on the Indiana Do Not Call list can file complaints about unwanted calls or texts through the Indiana Attorney General’s website at www.IndianaConsumer.com or request a complaint form by phone at (888) 834-9969. Complaints can also be filed with the Federal Communications Commission at (888) 225-5322 or www.FCC.gov.

National Consumer Protection Week serves as an opportunity for state officials like Attorney General Rokita to remind residents about protecting themselves against increasingly sophisticated scams and fraudulent activities.
