Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has advised residents to consider deleting their accounts with the genetic testing company 23andMe following the company’s bankruptcy filing. Rokita expressed concerns about the safety of personal data stored by 23andMe, noting that such information could be treated as an asset in bankruptcy proceedings.
“This is a company that holds very sensitive information pertaining to the individuals who use its services,” Attorney General Rokita said. “This data could be considered an asset to be sold or transferred as part of any potential bankruptcy proceeding. The best way for Hoosiers to protect their information is to delete their accounts now.”
Consumers can request account deletion through 23andMe’s customer care portal.
The warning comes amid broader concerns about how personal and genetic data may be handled during corporate bankruptcies, particularly when companies possess large volumes of sensitive consumer information.
