Gary man receives over six years for armed hotel robberies

Montell Efrem Ward, a 51-year-old resident of Gary, Indiana, has been sentenced to 77 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to two counts of robbery. The sentencing was handed down by United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon.

Ward will also serve two years of supervised release following his prison term.

Court documents state that in January 2023, Ward committed robberies at two hotels in Merrillville, Indiana. During the first incident, he threatened a hotel clerk with a knife and restrained the victim using computer cords before taking money. The following day, he robbed another hotel clerk at knifepoint. In total, Ward stole $300 from both incidents.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation into these robberies. Assistant United States Attorney Joel L. Mathur prosecuted the case.
