Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has filed a lawsuit against Dillsboro Emergency Ambulance Unit Inc., a nonprofit organization, alleging that it has failed to provide adequate emergency services to the community. The complaint claims that this failure has resulted in long wait times during emergencies, putting residents at risk.

“Dillsboro and surrounding Dearborn County residents deserve an ambulance service provider that responds to calls in a timely manner,” Attorney General Rokita said. “The nonprofit assets held by this corporation should be put to use for their intended purpose. Their response time is unacceptable when lives are truly at stake.”

Dillsboro Emergency Ambulance Unit was established in 1965 with the goal of providing emergency services in Dillsboro and nearby areas. The organization operated until 2024, when it did not secure a contract for services in Dearborn County.

According to the lawsuit, the ambulance unit’s response rate has been declining since at least 2021, reaching as low as 12% of calls responded to recently. This decline forced the local community to seek additional providers and allocate resources to cover gaps left by the nonprofit’s lack of service.

Attorney General Rokita is seeking action under the Indiana Nonprofit Corporation Act. He is asking for a receiver to be appointed over Dillsboro Emergency Ambulance Unit so that its affairs can be wound down and its assets used for the benefit of citizens in Dillsboro and Dearborn County.
