Following recent severe weather across Indiana, Attorney General Todd Rokita has issued a warning to residents about the risk of scams related to storm damage. Scammers often take advantage of such situations by offering fraudulent repair services or engaging in deceptive practices that can leave homeowners financially vulnerable.
Attorney General Rokita emphasized the risks associated with post-storm recovery efforts. “Storms can be unpredictable and devastating, but the aftermath can be even worse, potentially leaving you vulnerable to financial ruin,” he said. “Our office stands ready to assist Hoosiers and hold scammers accountable. Together, we can work to prevent fraudsters from derailing recovery efforts.”
The Attorney General’s office reports that after major storms, some individuals may approach homeowners with promises of quick repairs but either fail to deliver on those promises or provide substandard work after collecting payment.
Residents who suspect they have been targeted by a scam are encouraged to file a complaint through indianaconsumer.com or contact the Attorney General’s office at 1-800-382-5516. The Consumer Protection Division continues its work throughout the year to protect Indiana consumers from fraudulent activity.
Attorney General Rokita also recommends staying informed about common scams during storm season and following guidance provided by his office for personal protection.
