Kevin Ellis, 41, from Mishawaka, Indiana, has been sentenced to 72 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and possessing fentanyl, methamphetamine, and marijuana with intent to distribute. United States District Court Judge Cristal C. Brisco also ordered Ellis to serve four years of supervised release following his prison term.

The case documents show that police stopped Ellis while he was driving and found a loaded gun with a large capacity magazine, fentanyl pills, methamphetamine pills, marijuana, and a digital scale in the vehicle. A subsequent search warrant at his home led officers to more fentanyl and methamphetamine pills. Ellis had previously been convicted on federal firearms charges and was not allowed by law to possess a firearm.

Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor commented on the outcome: “Kevin Ellis admitted that he illegally possessed a gun,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Proctor.  “He also admitted that he possessed, and planned to distribute, some of the most dangerous drugs available.  His case shows that those exposing the citizens of this District to such dangers will suffer the consequences.  I thank all the public servants involved in this case for bringing it to a just end.”

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), with help from the Mishawaka Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Lydia T. Lucius prosecuted the case.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative focused on reducing violent crime and gun violence through cooperation among law enforcement agencies and communities.
